Falling asleep on their own, does it really matter?

Most of the books and anyone with an opinion (and that’s eeeeeeeveryone) tells you that your baby must learn to fall asleep on their own. This is the key apparently to successful sleep because they can then do it again in the night when you’re not there. So, what am I doing wrong then eh? My little girl can fall asleep beautifully on her own, without me in the room but then wake every couple of hours thereafter. On other occasions she needs me to almost lay in the cot with her until she’s asleep and we don’t hear a peep for hours. There really is no pattern to it, no obvious explanation for it. We follow the same routine every time. It’s just another one of those theories that I don’t buy.
